Presented is the modern view of epidemiology, risk factors and genetic predisposition to irritable bowel syndrome that arises following an exposure to intestinal infection (PI-IBS — post-infectious IBS). Features of the PI-IBS mechanism development are considered. A new explanation of visceral hypersensitivity characteristic of PI-IBS patients is offered. The role of intestinal microflora disorders and immune status in the development of PI-IBS symptoms is emphasized.
