The effect of a new hydroxybenzoic acid derivative was studied in rats with bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCAO). Mortality, neurological and behavioral deficiency was assessed within 72 hours after BCAO. Preventive C-38 administration (9 mg/kg) resulted in decrease in mortality (by 32 %) and severity of neurologic deficit (by 38 %) compared with the control group treated with vehicle. C-38 administration promoted increase of locomotor activity in the Open Field test, as well as the memory preservation in the active and passive avoidance tests in animals with brain ischemia. The cerebroprotective activity of C-38 was comparable to the citicoline.
