The aim of the work was to study the morphological features of the placenta of rats at a late gestation. The experiment was conducted on 40 white female rats of the Wistar line. As a result, by the end of the gestational period, a complex of destructive changes was revealed, indicating a high degree of maturity of the placenta. An increase in the number of terminal villi and an increase in the exchange surface of the capillary bed amid a decrease in stem thickness, on the one hand, indicate an acceleration of metabolic processes. On the other hand, the observed decrease in the thickness of the hematoplacental barrier, impregnation of the stroma with fibrin, the presence of fibrin filaments in the sinuses, areas of necrosis and leukocyte infiltration along the periphery of the placenta, the occurrence of calcium salt deposition, indicates a metabolic disturbance. The obtained morphological confirmation of the «aging» of the placenta, namely the reduction of trophoblastic epithelium and the degeneration of the structural elements of the decidual membrane, are the starting mechanism for the onset of labor.
