NEW CRITERIA FOR RHEUMATIC FEVER DIAGNOSIS (REVISED STATEMENT OF THE JONES CRITERIA FROM THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION)

Abstract

The present article considered the modified Jones Criteria proposed by AHA. The main purpose of the revision was to increase the sensitivity of Jones Criteria by including Doppler echocardiography as a tool to diagnose cardiac involvement. Another reason to update them was current epidemiology of rheumatic fever, which should be taken into account while diagnosing RF. Advantages and disadvantages of the revised criteria were discussed. On the basis of the performed analysis one can conclude that the revised Jones criteria could not be applied in Russian clinical practice without any preliminary evaluation. Moreover, the revised Jones criteria should be thoroughly discussed by Russian national experts so as to produce consensus regarding the usefulness of these modifications and their inclusion in the national guidelines for diagnosing acute rheumatic fever.
