Asymptomatic pathology of thyroid gland in 54 postmortems (age 59,5±12,3) was investigated. "Small" locuses (0,35±0,2см) of non-cancerous tissue growth (181 "nodules") were found in 39 cases (72,2 %). About a half of "nodules" (78 of 181) had elements of radial symmetry. It was established that a structural unit of non-cancerous growth in the thyroid is "proliferation centers" ("symmetric nodules"). Nodular hyperplasia in the thyroid begins with pictures of proliferation. Structures like "adenomas", cysts arise later. At later stages of the process there comes atrophy and sclerosis of hyperplastic locuses.
